Wilfredo Martinez, 87, of Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026, surrounded by his loving family who adored him. Born on August 24, 1938, in Yaguajay, Las Villas, Cuba, Wilfredo lived a life defined by devotion, resilience, hard work, and deep love for his family. He immigrated to the United States in 1969 at the age of 30, bravely embracing an unknown new chapter. Proud of his Cuban heritage, Wilfredo built a life that embodied the American Dream while never losing touch with his roots. Through tireless dedication and sacrifice, he and his beloved wife worked relentlessly to provide their daughters with a good life and countless opportunities. Despite not knowing the language when he arrived in America, Wilfredo took bold risks, pursued his passion for cars and mechanics, and purchased an Esso gas station and repair shop. He later fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening his very own Wilfred’s Auto Repair in Union City—his cherished “taller”—located beneath his home so he could remain close to his family. Never one to slow down, at age 57 he began a new chapter with Ford Motor Company, where he specialized in diesel trucks until retiring at age 70. He was always willing to help those he loved through his generosity, kindness, and steady presence. He was the rock of his family—preserving Cuban traditions and creating a home always filled with love, laughter, music, warmth, and hospitality. There was never a stranger he did not befriend. A faithful and devout Catholic, he was a longtime parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church, where he found great joy in the Spanish Mass community. Family was the center of Wilfredo’s life. He was the beloved husband of 68½ years to Dalia Martinez; devoted father of Odalys Martinez-Ruiz and Arelys Martinez-Constenla and her husband, Gonzalo Constenla. Lovingly known as “Lelo” (short for Abuelo), a nickname affectionately given by his beloved grandchildren—he was a cherished grandfather to Joseph, Christopher, Cynthia, Andrew, Daniel, and Lauren and their spouses, a doting great-grandfather to eleven wonderful children ranging in age from 1 to 13. He is also survived by his sisters, Norma Martinez-Ruiz & Nancy Martinez-Gonzalez, as well as a host of nieces and nephews in both the United States and Cuba who held a special place in his heart. Wilfredo was never happier than when he was in his garage tinkering with cars, building, improving or inventing something—earning him the affectionate title of the family’s “Cuban MacGyver.” A gifted craftsman, he built at least four boats—the first in Cuba and the rest in New Jersey—all aptly named La Pachanga (“The Party Boat”). He took immense pride in launching them into the Hackensack River and sharing his passion with anyone willing to climb aboard. His love for music was woven into the fabric of his life, and his guitar was far more than an instrument—it was an extension of his soul. Rarely did he travel without it, and whether visiting loved ones in the next town, Texas or Florida, he was always accompanied by the two things he cherished most: his beloved “Cusa” (Dalia) and his faithful guitar. His backyard was the heart of countless family celebrations, filled with music, laughter, and the irresistible aroma of roast pork from the “Caja China” he proudly built by hand. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He will forever be remembered for his kindness, strength, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and in the family he cherished so deeply. Though a man of few words, Wilfredo’s actions spoke volumes. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dalia (03/19/26); his parents, Alejandro and America Martinez; and his brothers, William and Humberto Martinez.

Wilfredo Martínez, de 87 años y residente de Ridgefield Park, Nueva Jersey, falleció pacíficamente el 30 de abril de 2026, rodeado de su amada familia, que lo adoraba.  Nacido el 24 de agosto de 1938 en Yaguajay, Las Villas, Cuba, Wilfredo vivió una vida definida por la devoción, la resiliencia, el trabajo arduo y un profundo amor por su familia. Emigró a los Estados Unidos en 1969, a la edad de 30 años, abrazando con valentía un nuevo capítulo desconocido. Orgulloso de su herencia cubana, Wilfredo construyó una vida que encarnaba el Sueño Americano, sin perder jamás el contacto con sus raíces.  Mediante una dedicación incansable y grandes sacrificios, él y su amada esposa trabajaron sin descanso para darle a sus hijas una buena vida e innumerables oportunidades. A pesar de no conocer el idioma al llegar a Estados Unidos, Wilfredo asumió riesgos audaces, persiguió su pasión por los automóviles y la mecánica, y adquirió una gasolinera y taller de reparaciones Esso. Más tarde, cumplió el sueño de toda su vida al inaugurar su propio negocio, Wilfred’s Auto Repair, en Union City —su querido «taller»—, ubicado justo debajo de su hogar para así poder permanecer cerca de su familia. Hombre que nunca supo bajar el ritmo, a los 57 años comenzó un nuevo capítulo profesional en la Ford Motor Company, donde se especializó en camiones diésel hasta jubilarse a los 70 años.  Wilfredo siempre estuvo dispuesto a ayudar a sus seres queridos y tocó innumerables vidas gracias a su generosidad, su bondad y su presencia firme y constante. Fue la roca de su familia, preservando las tradiciones cubanas y creando un hogar siempre colmado de amor, risas, música, calidez y hospitalidad. No hubo nunca un desconocido al que no convirtiera en amigo. Católico fiel y devoto, fue feligrés durante muchos años de la Iglesia Católica Romana de San Francisco de Asís, donde encontró gran alegría en la comunidad de la Misa en español.  La familia fue el centro de la vida de Wilfredo. Fue el amado esposo, durante 68 años y medio, de Dalia Martínez; y el padre devoto de Odalys Martínez-Ruiz y de Arelys Martínez-Constenla, así como su esposo, Gonzalo Constenla. Conocido cariñosamente como “Wilfre” por su familia y amigos cercanos —y como “Lelo” (diminutivo de Abuelo), un apodo afectuosamente dado por sus amados nietos—, fue un abuelo muy querido para Joseph, Christopher, Cynthia, Andrew, Daniel y Lauren, así como para sus respectivos cónyuges; y un bisabuelo devoto para once niños maravillosos cuyas edades son entre 1 y 13 años. También le sobreviven sus hermanas, Norma Martínez-Ruiz y Nancy Martínez-González, así como un gran número de sobrinos y sobrinas, tanto en los Estados Unidos como en Cuba, quienes ocupaban un lugar especial en su corazón.  Wilfre nunca se sentía más feliz que cuando estaba en su garaje, trasteando con carros, construyendo, mejorando o inventando algo; lo cual le valió el afectuoso título de ser el “MacGyver cubano” de la familia. Artesano talentoso, construyó al menos cuatro barcos —el primero en Cuba y el resto en Nueva Jersey—, todos ellos bautizados adecuadamente como “La Pachanga” (“El Barco de la Fiesta”). Sentía un inmenso orgullo al lanzarlos en el río Hackensack y compartir su pasión con cualquiera que estuviera dispuesto a subir a bordo.  Su amor por la música estaba entretejido en la trama misma de su vida, y su guitarra era mucho más que un instrumento: era una extensión de su alma. Rara vez viajaba sin ella; ya fuera visitando a sus seres queridos en el pueblo vecino, en Texas o en Florida, siempre iba acompañado de las dos cosas que más atesoraba: su amada “Cusa” (Dalia) y su fiel guitarra. Su patio trasero fue el corazón de innumerables celebraciones familiares, colmado de música, risas y el irresistible aroma del puerco asado preparado en la “Caja China” que él mismo había construido orgullosamente con sus propias manos.  Será profundamente extrañado por todos aquellos que lo conocieron y amaron. Será recordado por siempre por su bondad, fortaleza, generosidad y su inquebrantable devoción a la familia. Su legado perdura en las muchas vidas que tocó y en la familia que amó tan profundamente. Aunque fue un hombre de pocas palabras, las acciones de Wilfredo hablaban por sí solas.  Le precedieron en la muerte su amada esposa, Dalia (03/19/26); sus padres, Alejandro y América Martínez; y sus hermanos, William y Humberto Martínez.
