In Loving Memory of Oscar Zatarain




Oscar Zatarain, 87, of Fort Lee, NJ, passed away peacefully on May 21, 2024. Born in Melena del Sur, Cuba, on June 19, 1936, Oscar lived a life filled with love, dedication, and service.


In 1968, Oscar courageously emigrated from Cuba with his beloved wife Elvia and their young daughter, escaping the communist regime in search of a better future. Settling in the United States, Oscar began working at Kay Rose Furniture, where he dedicated 33 years of service before retiring.


Oscar's greatest joy was his family. He was married to the love of his life, Elvia, for 66 beautiful years. Together, they built a family that brought immense pride and happiness. He is survived by his wife Elvia; his daughter Elvia and her husband Jose Ruiz; his grandson Robert Ruiz, his fiancée Lindsay Carroll, and his great-grandsons Aiden and James Ruiz; his nephew Jorge Zatarain Jr., Ernesto Zatarain and his wife Audrey; his grand-nephew Daniel Zatarain, and his grand-nieces Sabrina and Juliana Zatarain.Oscar was predeceased by his parents, Mercedes and Oscar Zatarain, and his brothers Jorge and Ernesto Zatarain. Despite these losses, Oscar's spirit remained strong and his heart full of love. A man of deep commitment to his community, Oscar was a founding member of the New York Cubans Lions Club, dedicating over 40 years to its mission. His love for family, community service, and his passion for dominos were well-known. To know Oscar was to love him, and he will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate to have known him.Oscar was immensely proud of his grandson Robert, particularly for Robert's dedication to his community as the Board President of the Pike County Public Library.


Visitation in Oscar’s honor will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024 beginning at 4 P.M. and concluding at 8 P.M. Funeral Mass Friday, May 24th, 9:30 AM at St. Francis R.C. Church, Ridgefield Park. Entombment to follow at Madonna Mausoleum, Fort Lee.
