Mercedes S
Aviles
Aug 11, 1934 — Jun 14, 2026
Mercedes S. (nee Alonso) Aviles, age 91, of Ridgefield Park, NJ, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026. She was the beloved wife of her late soulmate, Pedro Ernesto Aviles, devoted mother to her cherished daughters, Susan (Mike) Ruiz and Maritza (Anthony) Matos, and the proud grandmother of Ariana, Christian, Richard, Rachel, and Anthony. Her family extended far and wide, with nieces and nephews who adored her. Though predeceased by her brother Francisco Alonso, Mercedes never stopped celebrating the bonds of family.
She was a woman of passion. Whether she was swaying to her favorite music or teaching the family's children to dance with rhythm. Her love for shopping was matched only by her talent as a seamstress, spending years stitching fabric and memories alike. She was also a devout supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and honored her late Husband’s legacy by consistently supporting the Wounded Warrior Project. She also spent time rooting for the Knicks and Mets. Sharing memories of heartbreak and elation with her family whenever a game was on.
Mercedes was at her happiest in the kitchen, cooking up meals that brought her family together, or simply laughing while surrounded by those she loved. Her vibrant spirit, generosity, and zest for life will be deeply missed, but her legacy lives on.
A Visitation in Mercedes's honor will be held on Thursday, June 18th, beginning at 4 P.M. and concluding at 8 P.M. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 19th, 11 A.M., at St. Francis R.C. Church, Ridgefield Park. Cremation will be private.
