Ernesto Julio Velez Jr, age 72, of Ridgefield Park, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026. He was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the loving son of the late Mercedes (nee Rivera) Velez and the late Ernesto Julio Velez Sr. Ernesto was the loving father of Michelle Mercedes, Ernest Re'ne, and Ernesto Julio Velez III, and cherished grandfather of Curtis III, Xavier, Lillyana, Iyana, and Domnic. He is also survived by his four brothers, Leandro, Giovanni Sr., Roberto, and Wilfredo Sr., and his sisters Carol Velez and the late Clariza Vasquez, and his beloved nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Ernesto worked for many years as a Maintenance Facilitator and was a proud United States Army veteran, honorably discharged. He was affectionately known as the “Town Mayor”, always ready with a smile and a friendly chat. More than anything, he treasured time with his family, whether gathered around the table or simply enjoying each other’s company. Those moments were his greatest joy. Ernesto loved trying his luck playing the lottery and connecting with friends and neighbors, always bringing people together. As a Crossing Guard, he took great pride in protecting children, a role he truly loved. A passionate sports fan, Ernesto cheered faithfully for the Yankees and Knicks. His warmth, humor, and big heart will be missed by all who knew him.

Visitation in Ernesto’s honor will be held on Thursday, August 13th, beginning at 4 P.M. and concluding at 8 P.M. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 14th, 9:30 A.M. at St. Francis R.C. Church, Ridgefield Park. Interment to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Congers, N.Y.
