Antonia Rodriguez Laboy passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, May 2, 2026. She was born in Patillas, Puerto Rico, and later moved to the Bronx, New York, where she worked in various jobs. It was there that she met her husband, Luis Mercado. They wed on October 2, 1954, and celebrated 59 years of marriage.

On July 28, 1955, they welcomed their first child, followed by five more children over the years. In 1964, they bought a home in Bay Shore, New York, where Antonia lovingly tended to her gardens, showcasing her talent as a landscaper.

In 1966, Antonia moved back to the Bronx and eventually returned once more to Guarbo, Puerto Rico. After the passing of her beloved husband, she came back to be near her children in Teaneck, New Jersey. Even there, she continued her passion for gardening on the premises of 60 Bergen Avenue until she could no longer. When you visit the residence, remember Antonia by enjoying the plantings she left behind.

She is survived by her four sisters, six children, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She is also survived by one daughter in law, two sons in laws, two grandsons in laws, and her great granddaughter’s fiancé.

Antonia’s legacy of love, strength, and gardening will continue to flourish through her family.

A Visitation in Antonia’s honor will be held on Tuesday, May 5th, beginning at 9 A.M. and concluding at 11 A.M. Interment to follow at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery.
