Alice English Glynn was born September 6, 1936 to Helena Cusack and Edmond English, one of fourteen children in the family from Ballylanders, Limerick, Ireland. Alice and her sister Philomena emigrated on the ship Britannic in 1954. Their younger brother Tom joined them later in the U.S. Alice married Martin Glynn in 1957 in Jersey City. Her religion was her life’s anchor and her belief in a loving God unshakable.

Alice leaves behind three children. Daughter Maggie, her husband Michael, their children Connor and his partner Maria and daughter Molly. Daughter Ellen Alves (husband Sergio deceased), their son Gabriel, daughter Arianna and her husband Stuart and their children Kai and Ernest. Son Martin and his wife Rene and their children Ruby and Gavin. And a loving and caring extended English and Glynn family in the United States, Ireland, and England.

Her friends brought fun and companionship to her life. She enjoyed her decades in Ridgefield Park and later her social life at the Oaks. In her move to Denville, her nephew Fr. Martin was a source of comfort and good conversation.

Alice was passionate about religion, books, music, the arts, politics, and education. She pursued a GED, a periodontal assistant certification, and later a Bachelor’s degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Her grandchildren hold precious memories of life with Grammies. “She would always say to me ‘The essence of joy is gratitude.’” “I loved going to their house and Grammies would make fresh soda bread and we’d sit on the porch and read the paper.” “She is who I think of when I cut open a beautiful avocado or serve a prime piece of beef and of course the sweet treat I put aside to enjoy slowly. I will feel her in the sway of the flowers in my garden. I know Pringa is waiting for her with a nice cup of tea and today’s jumble. Thank you, God.” “She loved music, specifically the old Irish bands and the sense of family and love it brought to her. The sing-alongs were some of my favorite memories with her and Pringa.” “Anytime we watched Grammies dance with Pringa it was like watching them disappear into their own world where they both seemed extremely happy.”

Today we would like to think they are dancing once again in heaven. If you would like to make a memorial contribution, choose your favorite charity. She supported many. Feeding the hungry and immigrant rights were two favorites.

A Visitation in Alice’s honor will be held on Sunday, September 20th, beginning at 2 P.M. and concluding at 6 P.M. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, September 21st, 10 A.M. at St. Francis R.C. Church, Ridgefield Park. Interment to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Hackensack.
